I want an IM client which supports Jabber and IRC. I don't like Adium, so are there alternatives? I am currently using iChat and LimeChat, but I want a single app.

I am also trying out Proteus, but I cannot get it to work with IRC.

Fire used to support both of those, but I don't think it's been updated in a long time. Pidgin does support both Jabber and IRC, but style isn't exactly a strong suit of Pidgin, traditionally (the Pidgin team themselves suggest Adium for a more Mac-centric experience).

Adium is a piece of crap excuse for an application that crashes several times daily, won't add or approve MSN contacts, and won't transfer files to non-Adium contacts (that last thing has only appeared in recent builds). I keep it up to date. Are there really no decent chat apps for mac?

Yeah I have to agree with Adium problems:

1. In order to add a contact i have to ask the other user to add me as well, as otherwise it doesn't work.
2. Some of my contacts are blocked automatically, i need to go to live messenger on mac to unblock them
3. As of recently turns out that people write to me, but i don't receive the messages! :( I see the status of the people accounts but not even a single hint that they sent me a message.
4. Some files cannot be sent to me or the other way around. Same goes especially for the pictures.
5. Custom emoticons of other users are simply not displayed, or are displayed but rarely. Seems to be irregular.

And thats just the major problems that Adium has. There is more. So Adium is not that good anymore and it goes without saying that i keep my stuff up to date. In fact it was more stable previously.

P.S. I will give Trillian a try today. I don't remember for what reason I decided not to use it before.
