Hi all,

I don't feel like shelling out the money for MobileMe, my free trial is up.

Is there an alternative to MobileMe?

Marc

Gmail for Calendar/Contacts/Mail.

Dropbox for Online Storage.

Cylay (if jailbroken) for Security (Find my iPhone).

Depends...

What are you using it for? If file transfer and storage, try Dropbox. I found this last week, introduced a couple of colleagues to it, and now none of us understands how we could have got by without it.

Google Apps for Mail, Contacts, Calendar (and storage if you don't need 20GB). It is what I use ($10/year for domain registration) and I couldn't be happier.

I want to use it like an air sync.

Haven't renewed my MobileMe subscription either. My email still works though, does anybody know how long it carries on working for?

Just use Gmail, Google Calendar and GSync to Over-The-Air sync your calendar + mail.

If you want storage, Dropbox is king.

What else did you want to OTA sync?

+1 to this. There is nothing as simple and elegant as MobileMe for an iPhone, especially if you have a Mac or two to sync with. Everything just "works".

It's a shame the same can't be said of the PC version. Apple's Mobile Me control panel has some very serious CPU usage issues that have been going on for months that Apple have yet to bother themselves to fix. Really pees me off for the so called 'premium' experience.

I have to admit, as much as I love everything MobileMe does, I would have a hard time justifying it if I didn't run on Macs. Between a Macbook and an iMac for home and at work, it just makes it way too easy and convenient to keep them all in sync.

DoesWindows even have a unified contact list or calendar if you don't use Outlook? And can third party programs like Thunderbird tie into them? It's been so long since I've had to use Windows for any serious work .

Mine was working 16 days past my renewal. I renewed it at that point though. I'm not for sure exactly how long it will go for.

I don't think google for domain syncs contacts. You have to sync google contacts with itunes first, and then plug in your iphone. Not too convenient because the only time I plug in my iphone to my computer is to do software updates.

I never had a problem with the MobileME control panel on Windows. I never looked at it's CPU usage tho. Apple does have a tendency not to care about yesterday's specs.

You'd know if you had the problem as MobileMe takes up 90%+ of CPU usage until you kill the process, making your entire computer grind to a halt. Nice programming Apple.

Some update a couple months ago caused this. And prompts that it couldn't sync.

It is wiped now, since i replaced the Windows laptop it was on. I haven't seen the problem yet on my MBP with Windows under VMWare Fusion.
