Alternatives to Ragtime Solo or Scribus?

I'm a new mac convert looking for a free (or cheap) dtp / page layout program to do a newsletter / brochures etc for my church. I've read about ragtime solo but unfortunately this appears to no longer be free. On the PC I have used Scribus and found it to be good except when trying to do tables (which I just couldn't get to work properly). I've been tearing my hair out trying to install Scribus on my new mac so want to try something else...

Have you thought about Apples own iWork?

Its not free but its still good value and its more than just DTP

Yes I have tried the pages trial that came with my new Imac. I liked it but was hoping for something a little more powerful. I found it struggling a bit with a fairly simple double sided booklet I put together - but of course this may just be because I am used to different ways of doing things in Scribus and Quark on the PC.

It may just be that I end up going the Pages route though. Thanks for your help.
