Reading some of the reviews on Amazon and someone mentions that it's not compatiable with higher Mac10 OS system.

What does this mean?

If your intended use includes playing DVD films, be aware that DVD Player won't play from any other drives than Apple SuperDrives. Other software will work fine, though. Just if it's important to you.

That`s not accurate, my external DVD drives playback no issue with Apple`s native DVD Player. I just tried one now to be sure. Only issue I see is region locking, and that can be circumvented.

Q-6

I have a Samsung usb DVD burner that I got off amazon. Works fine, and it was about $20.

Maybe a little off topic but I use a Digistor DVD reader that i found on Ebay for 40Eur. Reason is that i want to plug it to my old cinema display that does not have enough power to drive the Apple one that i have too (I have the message "not enough power plug directly to the mac computer". The Digistor has a small battery inside and can be plugged to a non powered usb hub or a screen. Seems to work fine for casual ripping...
