Several versions of WatchOS ago, you used to be able to set the middle complication to Altitude and it would show the altitude with large digits.

In current watchOS 9 or 10, you can't do that. You can set one of the smaller complications to show Level (which is under the Compass subheading). While this works, instead of just showing the numbers, they use a ridiculously tiny font size, which I can barely read even with my glasses on.

I have found that if you tap the (tiny) complication, you drop into the Compass app, and if you tap the "i" icon, you can see altitude with a larger font size, but it's a lot of tapping.

Can it be done: large font middle complication that shows altitude?

Which watch face?
I can do that on the modular face for Ultra 2 and yes the font is small but still readable for me.
I can see it being an issue on a smaller watch

Are you sure?
I have an Ultra 2, and I’m not able to set an altimeter for the middle complication with either the modular or modular ultra watch faces. I can choose “compass” for the middle complication, but that doesn’t show altitude.

I tried bottom and it’s an option there, on the Ultra modular… Apple has some restrictions on what to show where, so yes, in the middle you can’t

Yeah, the altimeter is hard to read even on the Ultra. A workaround I've used is to create a new "X-Large" face. You can put one complication on that face so select Compass --> Elevation and there you go. More legible a glance, but of course all you get is time and altitude :( .

I also move the X-Large face so it's right beside my usual one - so just ONE swipe back and forth.

Clunky, but that's the best I've got.

One of my biggest complaints with the Apple Watch is Apple's failure to take advantage or the screen real estate and increase font sizes when able to do so. They will allow a large area for a complication and then use a tiny little font!

Not all of us have perfect vision!
