What do you think would be a better purchase? It's gonna be my first Mac purchase. I just don't know if buying a late 08' model will still last me, or should I spent the extra and get a new white unibody.

In my opinion, you will be fine with any unibody mac laptop. The one thing to consider about getting an older '08 unibody to make sure that it still has applecare. That will be an advantage of getting a new white unibody. All macs come with one year of applecare pretty much covering everything but accidental damage. you have either on the day of your purchase to the day apple care runs out to purchase an additional two years of apple care.

I see on Apple's Refurb site a white unibody MB for $850, normally $1000.

My first Mac was an aluminum MacBook which I still use everyday. Great machines. If you want a new one, get the white poly or a 13" MBP.

Sorry I am a tad confused. . . White unibody macbooks can support 8GB of ram while the aluminum ones only 6?

Correct

Keep in mind the "official" max as stated by apple is 4gigs for each. However, the white unibodies from 2009 and onward can indeed take 8gigs while the aluminum mbs from 2008 are limited to 6 gigs unofficially
