i have a late 2008 macbook pro and whenever i power the computer on or wake it from sleep it makes a noise (sounds like ejecting a CD). I believe this is from the optical drive or hard drive... i don't remember it happening on the mbps in the apple store so i'm going to check tomorrow. does anyone else's aluminum macbook pro make noises like this? does this mean something is broken?

That's your slot-loading optical drive.

It's a normal noise, and happens on all of Apple's notebooks that feature a slot-loading drive.

You'll be fine =)

Yep, its the slot loading drive initializing, it's a little weird at first but you ignore it after a while because the sound is so familiar. I actually find that every macbook makes a little bit of a different noise. Like my friend has the same macbook as I do and if he woke one or the other up from sleep I could tell which was mine because of the noise haha:D. It's nothing to worry about, totally normal
