So, a lot of people have talked about how the AOD is too on or bright. Mine is a bit dark though. When I'm on the active Lock Screen and press the side button, the screen dims and it looks alright. Then after a second it dims some more and now it's almost too dark. I could swear it did not do the secondary dimming on launch day. Anyone else see this?
 
There's this from Apple's website, but it sounds like you're saying it's not completely off but just dimmer than you expected, but just in case - be sure none of these apply to your situation:

Not sure if auto-brightness could affect it either (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness). You could also try restarting your phone to see if that stops it.
 
After testing it some more it definitely seems to include the ambient light sensor for this. So if you're in a bright room, the always on display is brighter than in a more dimly lit room. You can clearly see the brightness change when turning on/off a light.

Which makes sense conceptually but it looks a little too dark in some environments where I would favor the same brightness constantly.
