I just learned this from a German hands-on video and I have not read this anywhere yet. We already knew that the always-on display will turn itself off when it's in your pocket or it's face-down on a table. Apparently it will also turn off when the user has an Apple Watch and leaves the room the iPhone is in, which makes so much sense and is great attention to detail.

So cool. Never heard about this. You answered my question and was wondering if the Apple Watch would assist with this.

It will be interesting to observe what role the lockscreen will serve for users, especially those with an Apple Watch. Going forward, users will have the following touch points for display the same information:
-Watch
-Always on Display
-Notifications
-Widgets on Home Screen
-The app itself

Yep, I was just wondering this the other day. I was going to put the weather widget on my Lock Screen, but then I realized you can't use the depth effect if you're using widgets. I already have the widget on my watch and Home Screen, so I removed it. To me, the depth effect looks nicer than widgets. (I did end up putting the weather info in the first line by the date though.)

Yeah, they should allow to have widgets and the depth effect at the same time. A lot of users will miss out on either of those two things otherwise.

ive owned lots of iphones , i currently have the 13pro . this is the first time ive pre ordered a iphone . Just because of AOD . i run my business from my phone , being able to glance at it to check for emails or texts or missed calls . its essential for how i use my phone.

Depends on how you use both devices.

I personally have most notifications disabled for my watch. It only gets things like calls, texts (not IMs), and no-brainers like reminders, calendar etc. The things I will look to my phone for are different than what I'll look to my watch for. My watch is basically a watch and a dumb phone in one.

I'm not excited for the always on display, but I'm also not against it. It's whatever. Maybe it would be good for tracking an Uber Eats delivery? I'm still open minded and recognise how it's a step ahead in the tech.

is far more quicker than tap the display ?
the way Apple use AOD is for situations where you forgot to check your phone for new mails/notification and so on...thats all. For people that dont see very good i think this is just irrelevant..on android side all of your important info are much brighter and the rest of the display is turned off
People that intent to see if they got something new...watching the display or tap to watch is just 1 second away
I wonder hot this works when you are in a bright space/room...that dim display AOD i think it makes no difference at all..users will still tap to be able to see
We have to wait a little bit more to see if this is a hit or miss

Well it's hard to be faster than a glance in that direction . Lots of times I wouldn't have my phone in my hand if not for checking on a notification.
For me it's a must have.

Remember what Apple has to do on the watch...because people complained because of the first implementation of the AOD, because was too dim ...they improved the brightness

if you cant see because is too dim in a bright room/space...i bet is not faster..and what can you see on a dim display from a distance that is at least one hand away ?! Again, we have to see...because this is not the samsung away...on samsung AOD everything is very bright, you can see what time it is for example from 10 feet away, here?

with the watch they get away easy after they bright up more the AOD and lets not remember that the watch in general is on your wrist

Again im not saying that AOD is not a good thing...but i doubt Apples implementation is a hit. They should stick like on android side
And not copy the apple watch...because they are different devices...we dont have our iphone on our hand most of the time.
But i bet in 1-2 years if people will complain , they can improve/change it

We'll just have to see apple's implementation. Fingers crossed

IOS is growing increasingly more complex. There is an increasing number of features to enable, disable, configure and personalise.

However choice is good and most new features are introduced to users by how third party apps implement them.

What happens at night when its on the wireless charger next to my bed facing upwards?? Will it be on? Or do I have to manually turn it off every night which would be a giant pain in the bottom!

I've never used an android with AOD so I'll be turning it off. Just a waste of battery to me when it's not exactly hard to tap the screen to wake it.
