Hi having some real problems with my always on display not staying on my iPhone 14 pro I have followed some tips like turning off focus and resetting my iPhone soft resetting it also my iPhone is not in my pocket and I never put it face down some times it will stay on for a while but eventually it will go back to a black screen I had trouble with always on staying on my Apple Watch but that is now working and my watch is never far away from my phone and I also have the latest iOS 16.2 update

What do you mean by problems, the always on display does turn off under these situations:

Always-On display goes dark when you don't need it

To save battery life, the display is completely dark when:
  • Your iPhone is lying face down
  • Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
  • Sleep Focus is on
  • Low Power Mode is on
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • You're using Continuity Camera
  • You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)
  • Your iPhone detects that you moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch (Always-On display will turn on when your Apple Watch is close to your iPhone again)

It will turn off when it wants to as mentioned above. At least you're saving battery I suppose.

Oh interesting I kind of wondered about why the display was off when my watch was away from the phone.

Their have been several discussions here and in other online forums about this issue. It's called an Always On Display (AOD). In settings you can disable it. But their is no setting to actually make it ALWAYS ON…🤣…only Apple could name something an Always On Display that can be turned off but can’t actually be set so that it’s always on!

Which in fact is a problem or at the very least an oddly named feature/function.. I mean it is called a "ALWAYS On Display"...not a sometimes on display...LOL.
