Just got my 14 Pro set up and running.

Might be missing something but it seems the display is not always on?

When locked the screen is completely black. If I raise to look at it, it turns into what looks like always on mode.

This also happens if I touch the screen.

But after a few seconds it's all black again.

If I turn off raise to wake, it stays black the whole time.

The camera and Face ID sensor turn off the always on display if it doesn’t detect you near the phone to save battery life.

To save battery life, the display is completely dark when:
  • Your iPhone is lying face down
  • Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
  • Sleep Focus is on
  • Low Power Mode is on
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • You're using Continuity Camera
  • You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)
  • Your iPhone detects that you moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch (Always-On display will turn on when your Apple Watch is close to your iPhone again)

[Edit] it was due to low power mode, thank you!

As above was due to it being in low power mode, not sure how it got there as it hasn't run low yet.

Did you have any issue going from your physical SIM to eSIM?

Did you do a “quick transfer” to move your data and service.

I hoped to be able to use the always on display as a nighttime clock at my bedside. I'm happy with how dim it gets, but, presumably because of the fact that I obviously am not using the phone for a while, the display just turns itself off, making that option sort of a non starter :(

I wish Apple would give us more control over when the display should stay on. I was using the Natta app as a night clock on my night stand while my 13 Pro was charging. With the 14 Pro I figured I would not need Natta anymore, but it turns out I was wrong. I usually wake up several times during the night, and I frequently find that the display is off. Just give me a setting that turns off any 'intelligent' functionality to determine when the screen should be on or off. I'll decide, thank you!

Mine turns off overnight, I called Apple and they didn’t seem to know if this was normal behavior or not.

I have AOD on and it works normally during the day.

However, during the night, when I put it on charge next to my bed it turns off after about 30 minutes.

It even disables the tap-to-wake so I have to press the power button to wake the iPhone up, which is annoying.

Anyone knows how to make it stay on? I like using it as a night watch.

It will turn off if your sleep focus mode is enabled or if you didn't touch it for a certain time. 30 minutes seems right. This is the way the feature was designed by Apple, but I can't say if there is a way to disable this or to force the AOD to stay on all night.

I don’t use sleep focus mode, so it must be the other reason.

It is kind of silly to have an “Always On” screen that isn’t really always on, isn’t it? It’s actually an “On-For-30-Mins Screen” 🫠
