I was trying out a couple of new apps from the App Store when a message appeared on my late 2006 MacBook Pro running Lion:

'PTPCamera quit unexpectedly'

I found this unnerving, particularly since I had not been doing anything requiring a camera, and the green light at the top of my screen wasn't on. Am I being paranoid or is there a chance someone out there is watching me? I say this because I am aware that some apps like iAlertU, for example, take photographs without any sound or green light. My two apps were Soulver and UK Salary Calculator, both number crunching apps.

No. That process is responsible for transferring pictures from digital cameras and mobile devices to the computer. PTP stands Picture Transfer Protocol. It's rather harmless process that can't do much.
