i decided to do a software update and for some odd reason it wanted to update my airport card ... anyone know of this? and what does this update do exactly?

Its actually updating the software that receives the airport signal. Generally they offer better compatibility and new features as they become available.

Read what it says when you click on it/double click (cant remember) and it will tell you all about it.
