Am i gonna have to update from ios 13?

So ordered an Apple watch se. I've kept my iPhone XR on ios 13.5.1 because of battery drain bugs on ios 14. Am I now gonna have to update it for this watch? I'm almost tempted to return it at that rate. Ios 14 ruined my 2020 iPhone se hence why I bought the XR

My XS,7 and 8 all work exavtly the same on ios 14 as before on 13. No differences in batterylife.
your SE 2020 must have had an other Problem.

Apple Watch SE requires an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 14 or later.
