I had one of the first Macbooks, and after about six months the wire near the Magsafe connector melted.

Now, 8 months into ownership of my MBP, the charger is being really flaky and I now have to play with the cable for up to 5 mins before it will charge.

I have a new one on the way, but am curious - are these chargers usually so unreliable?

My MBP is largely used in one room. For one week every two months I do consultancy work in London and at that point my laptop is carted round in a bag, but it's not as if my charger is dragged around and abused.

Probably just unlucky that odds are against you. I had a MBP 2,2 from early 2006 and last year gave it to some friends and it still has the original power adapter/cord and there isn't anything wrong with it. I used to carry it everywhere nearly everyday too. So it got handled quite often.
