I have all my compilations grouped via iTunes. The albums are all flagged with the "compilation" flag, and my browsing is set to "group compilations together when browsing". Has been like this for years.

This has worked fine when synced to my 5G iPod.

That is, artists who appear in my library because they are on a compilation don't show up in the "artist" view. They only show up when I go to "Compilations" on the iPod. Thats how its supposed to go.

However, when I sync this same library to my touch, suddenly all the artists who are only in my library because they are part of a compilation are showing up under the "Artists" list.

What the hell? Did Apple drop this feature from the new iPod OS? It's still there in iTunes and works the same as it always has. It's annoying to have 2,500 artists appearing under artist view, when a lot of them only have 1 song (on a compilation).

Even weirder is that the iPod does indeed have a "Compilations" view, and it does have all my compilations. I just don't want those artists to appear when I browse by "Artist" (as has been the case since they introduced the compilations grouping).

Anybody else getting this? I hear it's the same on the classic & nano as well (hence a "feature" in the new OS).
