The user manual describes "E", "3G", "4G" and "LTE" symbols at the top of the screen.

Mine just says "ATT". My old iPhone 4 would display "ATT 3G" or "ATT E"

So what does it mean for the 5S when it just says "ATT"?

Can we safely assume you are on AT&T service? If you have LTE coverage, "LTE" will appear on the upper left corner of your screen. You may want to check the online coverage map for your location...

If it just shows ATT, then you don't have data service at the moment..

Are you in WiFi range? If the WiFi symbol is on the top of your phone, the Cellular data connection type is hidden. Launch control center and turn WiFi off, and you should see the symbols per the manual.

No symbol at that point usually means no cellular data at all

Are you on Wifi right now? If so, then you'll see the wifi signal instead of the "LTE/3G/etc" at the top of the screen. You can turn off wifi and then you should see LTE/4G/3G whatever. If you have wifi off and still don't see a signal...you shouldn't have data service, because it will mean your signal is too low. If you can access data with wifi off and still don't see the data service text at the top, then I would assume it is an issue with the phone and would try a hard reboot, etc.

Are in an area that you should be getting data service?

OP Post a screenshot of your screen.. that will settle the uncertainty.

If you have bars of service, and at&t showing (no LTE, 4g whatever) then you do not have an internet connection. It happens to me in the tunnel, I can probably make a phone call but if I try to use safari it wont work.

Try resetting the phone, that might help you grab a signal.

What about if I'm on wifi will it still show LTE?

No, as I responded in your thread, if you are on wifi, it will not show your cellular data connection. It never has on any iPhone. It will only show one or the other - wifi if you're connected to wifi, and cellular data if you are not connected to wifi.
