My PC's only source of internet is via my iPhone tether. It has been a couple years since I have had fire wall protection yet my PC run perfect.
I am not overly concerned or diligent as to what sites I visit...try to use common sense though a bit.
Would the fact that I tether contribute to a safety factor at all?

Thanks for your input.

Tethering has no effect whatsoever on security. What you're seeing is likely that security updates have gotten better across the board over the years.

Every modern operating system has a builtin firewall so unless you intentionally disabled it you have a firewall. Even then a firewall is not the only thing you need to protect you from malicious software. From your post it sounds like you needs to better educate yourself on computer security and how to protect your self against online/offline threats.
