I understood that I could listen to AM radio (using LTE) on my Apple watch - without carrying my phone with me. Is there an app that will do that? I have downloaded 3 different apps that appear to do it, but no luck.

Only Apple Music, and Radio (the Apple Music Playlists app) are able to stream from LTE to your watch standalone from what i understand. Apps are not supported just yet, unless that has recently changed?
Edit: i may be mistaken, from what i've seen only TuneIn, Musicloud, Cloud Music, Deezer, and Music Player for YouTube, are currently supported. If you're talking about listening to over the air AM radio, then no, you cant.
