I have a Panasonic HDC TM-700 1080/60p recorder. When I use 1080/60p mode (HD) my mac is unable to read the AVCHD files (m2ts format). If I use iSkysoft, I can convert m2ts files to mov files and then work with it in iMovie --- but it takes a long time - 30 minutes to convert a 10 minute HD clip. So I have two questions.
Question 1) Is there a mac app that can read the m2ts file format (AVCHD) natively ---- I have tried MPEG Streamclip but it does not work: "unrecognized" format. iMovie 9 and Final Cut Pro 7 does not currently support this, but will iMovie 10 or Final Cut Pro 8 support this? Is FCP 7 much better (faster?) than iMovie '09?
Question 2) I am currently working on a uMBP 2.8 GHz Core2Duo with 4 GB RAM but was disappointed with the time it takes to convert files and work with them in iMovie (30 minutes to convert 10 minute clip and iMovie locks up when I am editing files. Sooooo... I am currently looking at the new top-of-the-line iMac i7 and the 4 or 8 core Mac Pro's. Would such a hardware upgrade make a big difference?
Any advice on useful software and hardware are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
