Amazon today has the USB-C AirPods Max on sale for $499.99 in four colors, down from $549.00. This is a return of the Black Friday price on the headphones, and only a few dollars higher when compared with the previous record low price.

I feel like these would be insanely popular if they could get them down into the $350 range.

But yeah, the 2024 AirPods Max are probably amongst the top 10 worst bargains in Apple history. What a crap update.

I say this as someone who owns and likes the lightning version. They've always been over-priced.

This product update proves to me that Apple truly believes they can make anything and the “salivating masses” won’t think at all about buying them.

Way outdated tech and an interface change does not necessitate a $500+ price tag. Apple has lost touch with reality and the consumer.

$300 max until v2 comes out with better tech.

the USB C AirPods Max are easily the most laughable product "update" in history.

This remains the most baffling "update" for a company that has been stumbling on many fronts the past several years.

I doubt Apple wanted to update them, but had to as they cannot sell the Lightning version in the EU anymore. Same reason the Magic peripherals all went to USB-C around the same time.

I think Apple should have designed the AirPods Max so it has seamless Bluetooth connectivity with cellphones that use Qualcomm AptX or Sony LDAC encoding. It's actually not a bad-sounding headphone, but its connectivity leaves somethiung to be desired.

I have the APPG2 and I thought the APMG1 would be another level higher and I was disappointed because they were only marginally better. They do in fact block out more noise but I could only wear them for 1 hour max and that was without exercising. My ears began to sweat and the pressure was simply too much. My plan was to use them at the gym but the sweat issue would probably be even worse when working out. I guess they're great if you live in a cold area and need near muffs for winter... I ended up buying another pair of APPG2 for the gym.

I wish the AirPods Max had a collapsible design and better price point. My Sony X4’s are awesome, and remain the one product in my rotation that isn’t Apple. It’s frustrating they don’t connect as seamlessly as AirPods Max would, but I really can’t justify the cost difference and in my opinion poor form factor.

They’re ugly and outdated. There are tons of better products that cost less. The only way to sell them in large numbers would be to sell them for $200 or less.

These or the Beats Studio pro for $159?

Lets get the obvious answer out the way: it depends what you are looking for.

I would go for AirPods Max (I dont own any version) but it's the cost that stops me. It's also that silly case because if I am spending all that money, it should be protected well. I dont understand the form over function.

I had Studio Pro 3 a year ago and they were also incredible. Loved them! Worth the discounted rate at the moment.

All this talk about how expensive they are yet I saw a lot of them at our old gym. New gym, not so much. In fact none at all. We're now at the rec center which seems to cater to mostly the elderly.

Best Buy has had lightening on sale at 380 - 400 for a few weeks. If you’re brave, you can get open box for 330 ish (inspect them carefully). The sound, to me, is fantastic. Lots of hate about no improvements, but they are still really amazing for what they are. At 550, they are overpriced, period. At 300ish, they are overpriced but worth a try if you have a use case and are into Apple.

I used to see several people wearing them at my gym, but haven't seen any for a while. My first thought was that the ear cushions would get sweaty and gross, but those can be cleaned and replaced. Still, they seem heavy for the gym, but I understand that not everyone can wear in-ear headphones.
