This does not answer the OP's question exactly, but it may help a little.

I am just about to send back my Nexus Player.

It's fine, the UI is not as nice as Apple TV, but it is not offensive, like Roku.

But there is very few apps. I was excited about Plex, but the Plex app for the Nexus Player does NOT have channels, so basically it serves only as a local media portal.

The BT remote does not appear to have IR, so it's not compatible with universal remotes. The voice search is nice, but limited to Google products only and thus largely useless.

Overall, the Nexus Player fails compared to Apple TV (I was hoping to replace ATV with it).

I finally installed Plex Connect on my Apple TVs and while I find that going to the Trailers button is not the best user experience, I do get Plex Channels, which is a huge win over Nexus Player.

I also have a HTPC, which I only use as a Plex and iTunes server nowadays (and almost never use the iTunes part). I find the ATV UI much more palatable and sure-fire than dealing with the occasional vagaries of HTPC 🙂
