Amazon is actively developing a pair of smart glasses with Alexa virtual assistant built in, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

Designed like a regular pair of spectacles, the device will enable Alexa to be invoked by the wearer at any time and at all places, the report said, citing people familiar with Amazon's plans.

The founder of Google Glass is said to be working on Amazon's Alexa smart glasses

The company is reportedly including a bone-conduction audio system in the specs so that the wearer can hear Alexa's voice without inserting headphones.

The founder of Google Glass, Babak Parviz, is said to have been working on the Alexa product since he was hired by Amazon in 2014. Earlier this year, Google re-introduced its Google Glass wearable headset after discontinuing production in 2016.

In addition, The Financial Times reports that Amazon is also working on a more conventional home security camera, and that one or both of these products may appear before the end of this year.

Previous reports have claimed that Amazon is working on a successor to its popular Echo connected smart speaker and plans to bring the device to market this year in time to compete with Apple's HomePod, which is set to launch this December.

According to rumors that first surfaced in 2016, Apple is also working on several different kinds of smart glasses, with the main application of bringing augmented reality experiences to the wearer.

Reports this year suggest Apple's glasses will connect wirelessly to the iPhone, much like the Apple Watch, and will display "images and other information to the wearer".

Let me guess, the firefly feature is constantly active. „This item is $1,99 on amazon. Say >buy-now< to get it until tomorrow“

Great idea but this will never take off with consumers. Good luck trying to convince people to wear glasses for AR and Alexa.

If done right this could be very interesting. For me it has to to be untethered from any mobile device and good battery life.

Just using voice be lot more simpler and cheaper to implement.

AR integrated into the windshield would be a wet dream come true. I suspect it won’t be long before we see something like this.
The hud in the windshield has been around for a while. I know not fully the same but preview of what it sort of would be like.

It will certainly raise some concern when dealing with messaging and driving I guess iMessage or texting will be disabled when the car is moving

Glasses are the next consumer wearable segmant. It is a few years out, like the watch it will be a slow burn but I think it is inevitible.

The major players know this. The rise of AR and VR is a proving ground for the potential the tech has. Devices like the Watch in the meanwhile double as an exercise in shrinking components that will eventually end up in form of glasses.

Jaguar showed off their AR windshield concept work back in 2014:

As for glasses, Google re-introduced theirs after companies figured out how useful they could be to warehouse workers.

One of the original smart glasses was reportedly invented by a scientist who hated trying to remember all the sponsors' names at fund raising parties. So he built a database and used his glasses to look up people he was talking to and give him info about them. Now that could be handy.

Wow, I can't believe I hadn't even heard of this before. If that's what we have right now, I can't wait to see what a more integrated/refined offering will look like.

AR glasses with cone conduction headphones and a tiny phone (something like 4s) with the glasses working as the main display when connected and phone's small (but handy) screen for occasional use. The day someone gets that working "just right", my wallet will be empty!
