Amazon is mostly sold out of cases (I'm referring to cases sold by Amazon, not counting merchants). They have maybe 3-4 cases left which are mostly silicon protectors.

With my 3G iPad arriving this Friday and a 1-2 week wait after that for the pre-ordered Apple case I am wondering what I should do to protect my iPad. Any thoughts? I either want something so amazing, I won't want the Apple case any more, or something cheap that I can throw away once I get the Apple case.

I found some cheap ones on ebay (less than $10) and figured it was better than nothing if I can't get anything else for a little while. I'm sure it's made pretty cheap, but it is a "convertible" style with a kickstand.

I suggest the Marware EcoVue case, or M-Edge Executive Jacket if you wanna spend a little more. The Marware is exponentially better than the flimsy Apple Case, and the same price basically. It's solid and really stylish, and the hand strap is great too.

Don't get the Apple Case

My issue with the Marware case is that its unstable in the typing position. Also I don't like the gray suede finish on the inside - black would match the iPad much better and look more clean. The M-edge I don't like because it just has corner hooks instead of covering all the edges of the ipad. And it doesn't seem as clean in design as the Griffin Passport as far as these types of cases go.

Plus all three of these cases are out of stock.

This is the problem right now - all the initial cases seem to have major flaws. Probably will be 6 months before well thought out cases hit the market.

I ordered an Incase portfolio from Apple and a Macally bookstand from Amazon. Both said shipping would be in 3/4 weeks. Both shipped within a week. Just go for it and you may be surprised!

I was at the Apple store in Buffalo, NY (Walden Galleria) last night at 5pm (just before closing).

They have about 50 official Apple iPad cases in stock right now.

I found faults in the Marware case, but this was not one of them. This is coming from someone that's actually owned one.

I guess I can see where the Griffin could be described as "cleaner". However, the M-Edge has much more functionality while still looking nice and "clean". The M-Edge can position to landscape, has a handstrap and comes in several colors. IMO, the M-Edge is much nicer looking than the Griffin and the added functionality is just a bonus. In addition, the $49.99 price for their leather version seems rather reasonable considering the other companies that try to jack up their prices because they are using leather.
