It's only good relative to Intel otherwise a pass compared to 7800X3D for efficient performance. x64 needs healthy competition so perhaps Nvidia taking over Intel would be a good move. Better to save the funds and see how Nvidia RTX5090/5080 turn out.

Still haven't seen much reason to upgrade my gaming PC from a 5800X3D. Paired with a 4070, it does great at 1440p without drawing stupid power from the wall.

That said I'm still using a 4K 60Hz display and would love to replace it with something capable of 120 or 144Hz - that might force me into upgrading.

Bad upgrade from 7800X3D. Even the box is smaller.

I’m still satisfied with the results and still think it is a solid CPU for this generation. The problem is that the hype of the “best gaming cpu ever” makes the availability short and it is sold out everywhere, and the eBay pricing is ridiculous at $700-800, while even the $479 MSRP is not so good for an 8-core CPU.

The efficiency regression is a bit unfortunate but that is expected as Zen5 is the most power hungry architecture that AMD has ever released. I have an impression that the core design now has a clear tendency towards DC and not optimized for client which requires high frequency which hurts efficiency. The vastly improved SIMD also helps games little but is crucial to DC.

I still hope AMD could release a no-compromise MSDT X3D CPU which has 2 3d cache ccds. The rumored 9950X3D could be that, but it could also only has one 3d cache ccd. I could finally upgrade my current desktop when that is released as my current 12900 will be soon outperformed by my new laptop with M4 Max.

I've read that all the Threadripper CCD's will have 3dv cache. I bet they are going to be super expensive (which isn't saying much, I know).

No plans to upgrade yet but figured it's good to stock up just in case due to high demand, possible shortage heading into the holidays and potentially increased cost with new administration tariffs with price on the 7800X3D up to 391% from a few months ago.

Most of the gains in gaming is at 1080p where it's more cpu intensive than it is gpu. Bumping up to 1440p or higher and the performance difference is extremely minimal. Not sure why anyone would spend this much on a cpu to game at 1080p but I guess if you're a competitive gamer chasing the max fps, then this is for you

Ideally, you want to balance CPU and GPU so neither becomes a bottleneck/limiter for the other. With increase in resolution, GPU becomes a bottleneck so CPU makes less difference. Hopefully, with upcoming 5090/5080 GPU will become less of a limiter.

Have to be a good boost for sure. Benchmarks I seen even at 1440p with a 4090 did not show any gains with this new 9800x3d chip. Its literally only 1080p games so far
