So im looking at getting the Macbook Pro 16 in with i9. So im having a small predicament with what GPU to get. I plan on doing some video editing using Adobe premiere when im mobile but I have a desktoptop with an RTX 2080ti for my main rig. I can get the i9 with the 5500M 4G from Adorama for $2529 with the coupons and promotions they are running but if I want to get the 5500M 8GB model it will cost the full $2899 as they have no sales or promotions for that model. Will I see a huge difference between the 4GB and 8GB model in terms of rendering? If the 8GB unit will only be a minute or 2 faster than thats fine but if the rendering speeds are drastically faster than I may have to go with the 8GB GPU. I dont plan on doing any gaming just pure video and photo editing. Thanks for any help yall can shine on this!

It’s a cost/benefit that only you can answer. If you have a powerhouse workstation, then I wouldn’t sink an extra $380 into an upgrade that will net you maybe a 5-10% performance benefit that you’ll admittedly only use in what sounds like off-case useage. But that’s just my $0.02 😛

Apple intentionally structures upgrade pricing to make you judge the cost relative to the overall price of the machine - that’s a losing way to think about it for us consumers.

thank you for your input that was my biggest concern is trying to find out how much of a performance increase would I see vs the 4 and 8GB models. I know the price isn’t a huge difference but the difference would cover Apple care for the 4GB model lol

I'm in the same boat and ordered the setup you mentioned from Adorama. I would have upgraded to 32GB and the 8GB GPU if it wasn't for the big discount but I've been questioning that decision. It shipped today and I might keep it in the box for a while to see if I can get the upgrades I want at a similar discount on black friday/cyber monday.

Yea, I wasn't to worried about it at first but when I checked this morning they added the 8GB GPU in. I would order on Amazon or Apple but I got their credit card and have 12 months financing which sweetens the deal. Ive been searching everywhere and cant find anything that has compared the 2 GPU's.

I found the differences minor for video editing. See my post; I compared both.
I did not see the same results as Max. In the real world, the iMac Pro was significantly faster, though to be fair I was comparing a 10 core 64 gb/vega 64 model.

Im going to return my MacBook tomorrow because its defect. I have the i9 with 5500m 8gb so I had to wait 10 days because I had to order it custom made. I need a new MBP asap so I can not wait again for 10 days again. should I go for the 5500m 4gb because that one is already in stock?

Now I used the MacBook Pro for a week and I wondered where the 8gb gpu comes in handy? I am a graphic designer and I've used it for photoshop, illustrator indesign etc.

So where do you really see the difference between 5500M 4gb vs 8gb

What exactly is the matter with your MacBook that you need to return it?

Might not take 10 days, fwiw I ordered another BTO Tuesday night with 23rd expected delivery and it’s already shipping today - card was charged. Guessing it’ll get here much sooner than the 23rd

I got mine at Expercom. I paid almost exactly $3000 for the 5500M with a 2TB SSD. No sales tax either.

does anyone have a link to the difference between the 4GB and 8GB version of the 5500?

One has 4GB the other has 8GB.

When I render out in Cinema 4D it uses all 8GBs of VRAM. I plan on getting an E-GPU with at least a 16GB AMD card within the next year.
