AMD to EOL Radeon HD 3000 series in Q3

AMD, or should we say ATI, is in a real nice place right now. The Radeon HD 4800 models have redeemed much what faith was lost with the Radeon HD 2000 and 3000 series. Even though they are not the fastest cards on the market, at their respective price points, NVIDIA is having some serious trouble to keep up. We're certain NVIDIA will do everything in its power to get back in the lead in the ~$200 segment, we're just not sure how it will do that. In the mean time, AMD is planning on launching its lower-end models based on the RV730 and RV710 cores.

This is due this quarter, I.e. Q3. When the Radeon HD 4600 and 4400 series hits the market, the older Radeon HD 3000 series will phase out as they have reached EOL (End Of Life). There is little reason for AMD to keep the older chips alive when they will be able to fill all segments with the new cores, which are also mighty cheap to produce.

What does this mean for the 3870 Mac and PC Edition?

Absolutely nothing. They'll still sell them for a while, they won't stop working. It suggests that ATI could release a 4700 for the Mac in a year or so though. This happens during every generation of video cards, the last generation get phased out in lieu of something new.

Well I know they'll still work.

But won't they go out of production real quick? If supplies are limited now, as they appear to be, how can you expect to find any after the EOL?

Considering it's the best well-rounded graphics card for the Mac right now, it'd be sad to see it disappear real quick.
