So I've been prepping an old 20" AL iMac for my mom to use. Her PC crapped out and she is finally ready to try OS X. This machine is perfect for her. She really only needs it for web browsing and some minor accounting/paperwork.

So I took the machine out of mothballs and began to remove stuff she won't need or use and to get data such as older emails I wanted to archive. I then remembered the superdrive wasn't working as it was the reason I stopped using it two years ago. At that time I took the machine apart and looked for a replacement, then realizing I would actually prefer a larger screen, so I abandoned the idea. The symptoms at the time were the drive would make a crunching noise at startup and not even appear in the hardware system report or in the drive utility. Nothing there at all. Now back when it originally stopped working, I attempted to do a system recovery and took other measures, but nothing worked.

Well yesterday I upgraded the OS and low and behold, the superdrive is magically working perfectly. I find this occurrence to be a bit suspect - a happy occurrence, but suspect all the same.
