I still keep thinking its April 1st and Google is pulling our leg.

I was really thinking it would be 5.0 and it be called Key Lime Pie

http://www.android.com/kitkat/

It's real. And Google is probably paying royalties to use that name.

Android went like this:

1.5 cupcake
1.6 donut
2.0 eclair
2.2 froyo
2.3 gingerbread
3.0 honeycomb
4.0 icecream sandwich
4.1 jelly bean
4.4 kitkat

The next should be

5.0 Defence Force Chocolate Ration

Yeah I'm not sure what to think of this. New name indicates it's a major update, but point release indicates otherwise. I really hope it's major, since 4.2 and 4.3 were relatively minor and the stale Holo design language dates back to October 2011.

The Nexus promotion with KitKat is probably an attempt to make the Nexus brand more well known. I've seen maybe 3 TV commercials for a Nexus device total, so any advertising is good for them.
Exciting stuff.

It seems really odd but both companies have stated its not a money deal. I couldnt really care less as long as 4.4 brings about s major overhaul.

Making it a lot harder for the CyanogenMod guys who are working on 10.2 nightlies based on 4.3, hahaha.

Well, it's kinda like they're doing updates in the OS X format really if you think about it.

I read a comment just now that made a fair point. Those users outside the US may not know what Key Lime Pie is whereas KitKat is something that people the world over know. Plus, it's a marketing opportunity for both companies, so why not?

Frankly, I couldn't care less what the name of the OS is. Does anyone really care once they have it? :D

Most people don't even have 4.3 yet, and the one who do aren't all that happy anyway because of the issues.

This really is a coverup to those issues.

They just finally gave it an official name and version number aka 4.4 .

It does not mean it will be out anytime soon and we will get lucky if the galaxy s5 comes out with kit Kat at launch.they usually ship with a matured version and will most likely launch with 4.3 and then jump in kit Kat after it has had a few updates released for it.same reason we still don't have a bunch of cells running 4.3 yet

The new nexus will be the first to use this and that won't be out till late Nov mid december

Very few times has a new name meant a new whole number.

Jelly Bean broke that tradition.

Eh?

Tradition?

Android 1.5 Cupcake
Android 1.6 Donut

Android 2.0-2.1 Eclair
Android 2.2–2.2.3 Froyo
Android 2.3–2.3.7 Gingerbread

Android 3.0-3.2 Honeycomb
Android 4.0–4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich
Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean
Android 4.4 KitKat

What tradition?

As if there wasn't any doubt as to the fact that Google is a marketing company first....

Since its a point release but with new name I predict:

- A new more modern UI, just like iOS 7. Not a huge overhaul, just refresh it.
- Apart from that some minor new features: more customizations on the home screen, more Google Now features, etc.

Maybe there's a chance they add some big features, but we'll see.

I don't think any money is involved, actually...

Trademark issues? Not to worry, as Google got Nestle's blessing to use the "Kit Kat" trademark (albeit without the space), but with a twist. John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships, explained to the BBC that "this is not a money-changing-hands kind of deal," but instead, they wanted do something "fun and unexpected."

Following one conference call with Nestle back in end of November, the deal was sealed just 24 hours later. And after finalising the details secretly at MWC, the chocolate snack is now doing a joint promotion with Google to give away some Nexus 7s and Google Play credit in the US and the UK. The BBC reports that there will be more than 50 million Kit Kats promoting the Android mascot in 19 markets (including Brazil, India, Japan and Russia), but it's not clear whether the giveaway promotion will make its way to those countries as well.

Did anybody else see the video, though...?
