The noise is weird. It's diagonal and "painterly". Very odd.

Yeah. I looked at these images again and my opinion has gone down a bit.
I think the new camera has better focus, and there is more processing going on. But I don't think the sensor has any more resolution.

I tried the following recipe an iPhone 3G photograph. (using Photoshop)
1) Rescale to 2000x1500
2) Adjust levels a bit to crush the blacks
3) Run despeckle

And boom! - you end up with an image which looks just like a 3GS image.

I looked at some of my iPhone pictures at 100%, and they have the same kind of noise. I guess I never noticed it before.

But the 3G S does seem more pronounced.

Even if it's the same sensor resolution, they're still better photos.
