Is it possible to set an animated GIF as the wallpaper without using another app? I wouldn't mind using another app if it were from the App Store, but I see no point paying for an app to do something so basic. The GIF's I have a high resolution and look great when opened btw, and I would just like it set as my wallpaper with its subtle movements.

I don't believe there is any built in functionality in OS X to do that.
