iPhone XS Animoji barely works

I can never get the Animoj/Mimojii to work right. It stutters, doesn't match my mouth and is just plain unusable,
It always asks me to get in the frame. What is the optimum holding position.
Anybody else have this problem? Just curious.

I find about 2 or 2.5 feet away works best. My children love holding it half that distance and also have trouble. Are you too close?

Possibly. I didn’t realize it had to be so far away. Thanks for the tip.
It’s frustrating because I use it in good light, look down at it, straight on? And it still wants me to frame my face then it’s really jumpy.
