annoying little sleep issue

when my rMBP screen goes to sleep and I wake it back up it goes to my mail instead of whatever web page or whatever I had open. WHY? so annoying i know it must be a simple fix

Is the Mail program just sitting in front of the program you were last using or is it the only thing running? If it's the only thing running, it sounds like you are not sleeping but booting up each time.
