It’s probably the fact I’m still using an iPhone X. However, I’ve noticed some very annoying bugs post update.

The biggest is that my background keeps disappearing (instead I get a solid black background). I’m really worried I’m going to misplace my phone as it no longer has a distinct background.

Sometimes the swipe to search screen just almost locks the phone. I can still switch between open apps, but I can’t get back to the Home Screen (menu of icons) without a restart.

Post restart the phone is very slow and laggy. It can take five minutes to recover and get to normal. Wouldn’t be a problem, except for the previous bug.

Finally, charging the phone seems to make it over heat. It stops charging automatically to cool down, but this makes fully charging the phone very slow, and can’t be good for the health of the battery.

Any one else see this?

I haven't noticed any of those issues. Using a 13 Pro Max here. Maybe it's time to start thinking about replacing your X with a newer model?

The background issue: sounds like a bug that existed early on. Various theories why (old backgrounds that are not "optimized" for lock screen widgets for example), can't seem to locate any threads (here or on Reddit) right now about this. I experienced this early on, but it's been a few months since it happened to me (definitely not seen with 16.2).

But as others mentioned, in total, sure sounds like some device issue(s) going on. At minimum, maybe reset the phone to factory settings and see if things improve.

Last resort barring a hardware problem you can update to the latest version of iOS. The early versions are usually particularly buggy.

The problem only started with the most recent version of iOS, so I'm not sure updating would help (until they release a newer version).

The backgrounds I try are just photos. However, it first went wrong when I inadvertently enabled widgets for the first time so there could be something there. When I reset the background it sometimes gets stuck, blurred.

I'm going to assume that the phone itself is finally dying, or at least the battery (I'll get it serviced). I was actually on holiday in Kenya when it started to really misbehave, and I think the heat and humidity just got to the phone (must have been as much a shock for it, as it was for me going from snowy Europe to tropical Africa). The battery would also drain extremely quickly in the heat - sometimes as much as one percent per minute, even when in low power mode and the phone locked. It's better behaved now that the phone isn't above its happy temperature the whole time and the background stays visible for longer.
