Something I always loved about Safari was not having to type the whole address - type gmail, hit enter and it would put in the http.com stuff.

But suddenly it now opens a Google style search page - very, very annoying! Is this a Safari thing or an ISP (Virgin Media) thing?

Yep, your ISP is doing it. Some of the more offensive ones are from comcast and verizon where the search page is plastered with ads.

If you're free to change your DNS settings, you probably could get around it.

I use OpenDNS currently, but that too takes you to a custom search page if you don't provide a 'full' url.

If you create an account at OpenDNS you can disable to search page and restore correct DNS usage.

Supposedly the OPs ISP has an opt-out link on the search page but there have been mixed reports regarding how well it's working at the moment.
