I don't think so. . .But is it really that annoying to hit one button? o_o

That said, I'm sure someone has some (non-obvious) fix.

lol yah it really is like i try to keep everything goin as fast as possible and one extra click just bugs the heck outta me as crazy as that sounds lol i think it bugs me mainly because with other user accounts it doesnt do that! argh lol

If you're on the desktop pane and you then quit system preferences, then re-launch it, what pane appears when you go to desktop & screen saver?

For me it opens on the pane I viewed last time.

k i went to it hit back then quit and tried leaving desktop pane open and quitting and it still it goes back to the screen saver one! argh lol

right click (or command click) the desktop and select "change desktop background"

Or use iPhoto to do it.

OR

use JustLooking - an OS X Image Viewer. It can scroll through images, and also set them as a background. It plays animated gifs, and doesn't crash trying to open certain images like Xee does.

I like it. sometimes you'll have to go into sys preferences to change the style it is in (stretch, fill, tile, etc..)
