I've got a little annoyance maybe someone can help me solve. I have an iphone 5 with 6.1.2. This drives me insane that I can't figure out how to do this. Lets say I call someone, then start to leave a voicemail, then they call me back in the middle of the voicemail. I want to hang up on the message and answer the live person. There is no way I can find to do this. I can either ignore the call, or put the current call on hold (I want to hang up) and answer the live person. I don't want to have their voicemail have a long message with nothing on it, but I don't want to hang up on them and have it go to an endless cycle of us calling each other back.

This thread addresses the issue you experience and should help you understand why this happens on your iPhone:
