There are lots and lots of places to find lists of anonymous proxy servers on the net (http://www.atomintersoft.com/products/alive-proxy/proxy-list/ for example), but what I'm wondering is if using these, whether you can or not, is legit. That is, are these proxies left open by sloppy sysadmins who never intended weirdos in another country to use them, or are they organizations that just don't care (or is there a way to tell the difference between the two)?

I also wonder a bit about sending all your network traffic through an unknown host; I wouldn't do my online banking through one, to be sure, but even "innocent" data might get you in trouble one way or another.

I'm trying to get to some sites in Japan that block non-Japanese IP addresses (nothing illegal, they're just trying to avoid video bandwidth leeching from people who aren't usually potential customers, I think), so I wanted to get there through a Japanese proxy server, but I don't want to be a bad neighbor or have my ISP contacting me wondering why some other ISP contacted them about weird stuff I was pulling in through their proxy server...

Anybody know more about this area? I know I can PAY for an anonymous proxy, but it's not really worth money for what I want to do--it was just for fun.
