I bought my Core2Duo Unibody Macbook Pro back in the end of 2008 and just a few days ago I received my i7 Unibody Macbook Pro. Over the course of the past few days, I will share with you my thoughts and what I've found to be useful and not so useful.
Physically, it's really the same except for the change in SD slot as opposed to the Express Card. I didn't find this too much of a bother and to be honest, quite useful since I do a lot of picture transfers from my SD card. No more USB cables attached to camera.
I turned off the Momentum feature for the Trackpad. I gave it a honest try and I just didn't like the way it felt. With it on, web pages just sorta tore/lagged when the momentum kicked in. Web browsers have plug-ins which replicate this feature and it it gives the same results. It just didn't feel natural.
The biggest difference I've noticed is the actual speed. Everything just loaded faster and smoother. The best part? The non-lag. The speed was humanly noticeable, so I'm not disappointed. In my previous UMBP (as any other PC), the initial launch of apps is always slower due to the system not having cached it. This new UMBP really hits a homerun. It's almost like that initial launch lag is non-existent. I'm impressed!
One nice little touch is the gradual increase/decrease of brightness. Unlike previous Macbooks, the transition (say from brightness 8-9) was flat. Flat, meaning the transition just kicks in. With this new generation, the increase/decrease is gradual. Nice touch!
The battery life is amazing. I really don't know what else to say. The liberating feeling is great. I can now stay in my local coffee shop for hours without having to carry my bag around. I can now just carry a sleeve.
I am frequent L4D2 player and this new graphix bump is light years beyond the first generation UMBP. I have everything on high and still have plenty of FPS to spare.
