I’ve done my research but previous threads haven’t settled this issue for me.

Basically I’d like to know which base model of the 2017 MBP and 2018 MBA is most ‘future proofed’?

I want to use this laptop for 5+ years. I’m leaning towards MBP because the processor and graphics are better. I’ve been using a mid-2010 MBP till now and the only reason I can’t continue to use it is when streaming soccer the image ‘clips’ at the top of the screen or the stream lags (which I think is cpu/gpu issue).

This, alongside occasional photoshop editing, will be my main use. In addition to the normal web browsing, viewing pdfs etc.

So really my question is which laptop will last longer given my typical use?

It seems you're already aware of the answer. Both of these models are relatively new (only about a year apart) but IMO, if future proofing yourself is the main concern, go for the model with superior processing power, which in this case is the 2017 MBP.

If we're strictly going off of geekbench, the 2017 MBP is about 20% faster when it comes to its multi-core score. When new Mac OS's are released and potentially require processing power, the 2017 MBP will handle it better than the Air. Ultimately your decision, but based off your needs and concerns, this seems to be your best option.
