Another activation question

I think I've seen this question covered here before, but now I can't seem to find it again, so sorry to be repetitive. Anyway, I'm going to be getting my iphone next weekend, but I think what I'm going to do is set up a regular account with At&t to get a free phone from them, and then go buy the iphone. So my question is, if I set up a regular phone at the At&t store, and then go straight home and activate an iphone and add the data plan, is it going to cause any problems with moving numbers around so fast? And do they charge for porting numbers, or do they just charge the one time activation fee? Thanks
