ugh. so i've been doing a lot of small free-lance sites lately, and spreading them out among various hosts just to see what's out there. i'm warning you all now: stay far away from hostultra.com.

on July 21, i purchased a domain for a year and a one-month hosting package as a trial run for their service.

on july 23, no whois info could be found for the domain and i had not received the email i was told to expect upon successful registration of the domain. i submitted a ticket and was told that registration generally takes 24-72 hours to propogate. i figured maybe i got the 72 hours end of it and decided to wait. on july 26, whois was still coming up blank. i re-opened the ticket and notified them that my domain name was inactive.

a whois check reveals they did not register the domain until the 27th, presumeably in response to my complaint. i submitted another ticket voicing my dissatisfaction and suggested that they extend my hosting contract by at least the 6 days they waited to register my domain. i think that's pretty fair, given that their delay meant my domain was inactive for almost 25% of my hosting contract. i was told my complaint was being forwarded to the appropriate dept. and that someone would get back to me.

no one ever did.

not that it matters, because i'd already decided not to renew my contract. however, i did have to notify them of my cancellation twice before they stopped trying to bill my credit card.

on August 15, i requested that they change my nameservers to a new host. i did not receive a response.

on Aug 19 i submitted another ticket referencing the last and requesting, again, that they change the nameservers. i was told that my request would be processed as soon as possible.

on Aug 24, no change had been made. i submitted yet another ticket, requesting that the change be made that day. i also notified them of my extreme displeasure with their service. again, i was told my request was being forwarded to the appropriate dept.

on aug. 27, i finally receive a response that stated, in its entirety, "Nameservers cannot be changed to a non .hostultra.com address"

i replied and said this was unacceptable, and that their customer service was atrocious. no reply. i replied again today and reminded them that i'm the legal registrant of this domain, and that they need to address my complaints.

i've been stern, but never rude with them, even at my current level of frustration. so i'm pretty angry that they continue to ignore my complaints. at this point, i'd be surprised if they responded, let alone capitulated.

but if anyone has any ideas as to what i can say or do to get them to release my domain, i'd be much obliged. otherwise, just know that hostultra does NOT run an accountable business and you should spend your money anywhere but with them.

As far as I know a whois query does not require the domain name to be propogate so they are lying. I couldn't really find any terms and conditions on their website though.
Sorry to hear about this. Hope everything will come up fine for you

If you don't mind losing the money you spent registering the domain name with them, you could use GoDaddy to transfer the domain and be done with it. Your current host cannot block this attempt, so you would just have to wait 1 or 2 days till you would be able to change the nameservers and sort the whole problem out. Then use http://asmallorange.com

Even if you wanted free hosting... stay away from Hostultra. Look at the limitations section 2/3 the way down this page.

those limitations only apply to the free hosting -- i checked before i registered. and since their paid packages are cheap and don't include that passle of ridiculous terms, i figured i'd give it a shot. i'm glad i only signed up for a month -- i'd be livid if i spent more than the $5 i did.

davecuse, i'm not sure what you mean. if i could have another host/registrant just assume responsibility for the domain, i would, but i though nameserver info could only be modified by the current host?

GoDaddy is a Registrar Service, they allow you quickly and very easily update the nameserver info yourself, rather than being forced to email around and risk someone else having a typo (or telling you they can't do it, which is complete BS). They are pretty cheap too, you can transfer all of the registrar duties over from HostUltra for $8 a year. That usually takes about 2 days to do, during that time you can set up a new host.

Once your GoDaddy account has full control over your domain name, you can simply change the nameservers they are pointing to from HostUltra, to whatever new host you have.

It's a pretty simple process, takes all of 5 minutes, just takes some time to propogate (24-48 hours). Again, I highly recommend http://asmallorange.com/ for hosting, they have great support (if that's your thing), a great forum community and I've had superfast response time from the server I'm on. And they are very reasonably priced.

I think Netsolutions (http://www.netsol.com) also offered this service as well but I think it is much more expensive. I think its more like a domain name management system where you can managed a bunch of domains (switching their nameservers, changing your whois information so on) but you need another company to provide the hosting for the domain name.
