My computer comes with a 320gb hard drive, when i verified the amount of space i have already used, the information it gives me is 297.77GB total and 18.54GB used why?

Also when importing cd's what's the best route to take? where i use up as little space as possible but maintain high fidelity? I'm using Apple lossless Encoder is the way to go?

Cant answer the music bit sorry, the drive bit (if new) is something to do with the way the system & drive read numbers differently but you end up loosing out once the drive is formatted
