Another how do I

Is it possible to plug in my electric guitar to my iMac and record without it making any noise?

For example:

1. I'd like to record video of me playing by utilizing FaceTime and plugging in my electric guitar. But, due to my living arrangements at the moment I can't make much noise, so I need my guitar to be silent while still being able to listen to it through headphones.

Ideas?

If you route the audio from the quitar to the iMac (might need an external audio card) and then use headphones as iMac's audio output, then it shouldn't make any noise (other than the quitar's strings).
