I've just bought a 24" iMac and discovered the crazy magic mouse charging point meaning that you can't use the mouse whilst it's charging. I don't have an alternative to use whilst it's charging so will ideally need to charge it whilst it's not in use. When the iMac is shutdown can it still charge the mouse, I was thinking that I could leave the mouse plugged in overnight to charge it?

Your proposal will work. There really is no need to shut down the Mac. Just turn off the screen.
Thanks, I didn't know you can just turn the screen off tbh, however this iMac is used on my clinic reception so it's best practice for us to shut it down anyway to prevent access to sensitive info.
