Is it possible to install Tiger and boot from it from my Iomega external HD.

Don't have any real need to do it, just messing around.

I believe only from an external firewire drive, not from an external USB drive, although someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.

Depends on the mac to whether you are right or not.

New macs can boot off usb drives and some older ones can.

What computer do you have?

Did they come with Tiger pre-installed?

If it did they you can use the install discs and install it on the external.

Tiger was never released to retail as a universal binary so you need the computer install disc to install it for it to work with an intel machine.

Yes, the Mac came with Tiger on the 2 install disks, and I got Leopard with the up to date program.

Could not get it to work. When I boot from the Tiger install disk there is an exclamation mark on the external drive and it says "can not install OSX on this drive" or words to that effect.

Have you formatted the drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

Yes I did format to what you suggested. In the end I just partitioned my internal drive and am running Tiger from there.

Any other advice for booting from the external would be great.
