I am about to be a new convert to apple computers. since a new mac pro is out of my price range, I have been looking for used ones. What I have found is a used intel mac pro with a pair of dual core procs and a gig of ram for $1400.00. is this a good price?

used mac pro

Be more specific on the pro. Also, the dual core pro's can be upgraded to quad cores. I did mine from 2ghz quad to 2.33 octo.
Everything else was basically what came with it when It was brand new. Not sure on the video card but I think its an nvidia 7300.

It comes with ilife and OSX 10.4. which I will upgrade to 10.5 at some point. maybe even wait for 10.6 instead.

I don't need or want to dual boot windows. I have a pc for that if I ever need windows once I make the switch. Believe it or not, my pc runs fine. I just want something different.

But is it the two 2.0ghz dual core chips? Or is it the two 2.66 ghz(the stock config) That changes if its a good deal or not.

Is it an early pro or an 08 or later model - you can do a lot more with an 08 due to better PCI architecture?

Don't get an 06 MP. Not unless it's a REAL bargain. I would go for a used early 08 MP instead, if you want to go that route.

Why not? I own one and it is really fast still....it all depends what your using it for.

The 08 Mac Pro's aren't *that* much better than the 06's. The cost difference between second hand 06's and 08's more than justifies the gains in performance etc.

I didn't mean to knock the 06 MP's! I know they're great computers. Heck, I was looking into buying one myself, but the price wasn't right.

But . . . it seems to me that there are plenty of good deals on used (or new) early 08 MP's, and they are significantly more powerful than the 06's, and well, just plain NEWER. A lot of people got new early 08 MP's for just under $2,000, with 2 GB of RAM. $1400 for an 06 just doesn't seem to me to be that great a deal.

Just my personal opinion, and nothing more!

Yeah, $1,400 for a stock 2006 MP might be a little high. If it's upgraded then that's different. But yup, if you can find a used 2008 2.8 for around $2k or less that would be better me thinks. 2.8 x 8 is better than 2.66 x 4. :) And the buss speeds on the 2008 are a little higher too! Not to mention that there are more official graphic accelerator options available for the 2008. If you can find a 2006 for around $800 or less then upgrading it can be fun and economical = worth it.

It wouldn't be an 08 model as it only has OS 10.4
Indeed - Sorry for being dumb!

I reckon the 06 vs 08 decision rests on both price and whether the poster wants future upgradeability. There is a lot of frustration of pre-08 Pro owners about the PCI architecture and upgradeability (The 08 and 09 can take the more recent version of the 8800GT, the GT120, Radeon, the new Quadro[not for bargain hunters], as well as a host of high end gaming cards for Windows bootcamp, and other PC cards that can be flashed to work under OS X). If the poster does not care about this then maybe a bargain can be found in the older models. If I was shelling about personally right now I might even prefer to build an up to date hackintosh for less money.....

I would probably offer the guy $1000 if he doesn't tell him to give you a shout if he is interested.
