Hi everyone.

After giving my 2017 iMac screen a good wipe down, I noticed that the anti glare coating on my screen is starting to peel off just above the FaceTime camera. I only use the Apple microfiber cleaning cloth (sometimes with distilled water for those stubborn spots) to clean the screen. Knowing Apple, they will probably claim it's normal wear and tear and refuse to fix it. I will probably wait until the problem gets worse before I bring it to the Genius Bar, but my main question is, is the anti glare coating this fragile? I assume it's the same coating on the MBP, but I haven't seen any posts on the coating coming off on the iMac.

When you bought it? Is it 21.5 or 27 inch? It didn’t came out of box with any anomaly in that area of screen?

27 inch

I bought it August 2017, but I did purchase AppleCare. The screen was fine when I got it, but I noticed something strange with the edges of the screen a few weeks ago. When I was cleaning it today, the coating came off.

Well all I can say that I’ve noticed this in my merc, it’s 5 years old now but it began about 3 years ago. Here ,where I live the temperatures are really high in the summer, so that happened to the screen in my car. My iMac is also 27 inch, but it’s only a month old, so no problems by now. Maybe it’s heating in that area of the screen ?

You may have received a defective screen. I purchased my 2017 27" 5K iMac last January 2018 and have cleaned the screen with lens cleaner and a soft tissue. The anti-glare coating is fine. Make a genius bar appointment and have them look at. They should either change out the display for you or give you a new iMac. Don't wait until it gets worse.

Thanks. I made an appointment for the earliest time available, which happens to be on Tuesday. I'm expecting them to either claim it is user error and refuse to repair it or replace the screen as a one time courtesy. This really shouldn't be happening on a $2k+ machine.

How can they refuse? These things shouldn't happen on iMacs. You didn't clean your screen with anythin abrasive. If you have that peeling then would show on other places, and the screen would be overall in worse condition.

In the early posts about the coating peeling off on MacBook Pros, a lot of people have said that Apple wouldn't fix it due to user error. Since the iMac isn't included as part of the repair, I have no idea what Apple will do.

That is just lame.In my country we don't even have apple store. If a unit is defective you get a new one, if you're out a warranty , you must go to a service in another country. And needless to say that here entry level iMac 5k is about 2800$ (2400 euros).

If still possible, you may want to consider purchasing Apple Care for additional warranty coverage.

I'm wondering if Apple is now using the same "spray on" anti-glare coating on iMacs, as is used on the MacBook Pro's..?

If so, "giving the screen a good cleaning" may not be the advisable thing to do.

Instead, "very light" cleaning may be warranted -- really, just taking a cloth and "dusting it across" the face of the display.

Using much (any?) pressure "against" the display surface should probably be AVOIDED unless there is something there that can't be removed by "dusting".

Are there any other 2017 iMac owners seeing this problem?

I would advise against using anything other than distilled water or something like iKLear to clean your iMac screen. Several years ago I accidentally used some lens cleaner on my MacBook Pro and it completely removed the anti glare coating in the center of the screen. Fortunately this was at the same time that Apple began to replace these screens under an extended warranty, and I was able to get it replaced for free. Since then, I'm extremely careful on what I use to clean my screens and I also try not to rub too hard.

If the anti-glare coating wears off just by cleaning the display with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water, Apple ought to replace the display for you without charge and I would encourage you to press them to do so. There is nothing more that can be said here except to take it to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider and letting us know what the outcome is.

I believe it's the same coating as on the MacBooks, but the problem isn't as widespread since the iMac screens are subjected to less wear and tear. In some of the areas where I didn't wipe down the screen with pressure, I noticed the coating peeling at the edges. I attached a picture to show what I mean. It's the area just above the flash reflection. Before then, I only used a microfiber cloth to lightly bat the screen.

You have a defective display. That anti-glare coating should not come off or peel off unless you really want it to. I've been cleaning all my iMacs over the years with lens cleaner and soft tissues and have never had a problem. Lens cleaner is safe as it is used on camera lenses which all have anti-glare coatings on them.

I have an update. They’re replacing the screen under warranty. If the anti glare coating is this fragile, I may reconsider buying another Mac with a screen in the future. Hopefully this doesn’t happen again.

You were just unlucky and received a display where it was likely that the anti-glare coating was not properly applied at the factory. Anyway, good to hear that Apple is replacing the screen under warranty.

I wouldn't be put off buying another Mac, I've had a few over the years and never had an issue with the anti glare coating. Mistakes can happen, even with the best companies, at least they're putting it right for you. :)

My experience with my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) model display is that I have had the display replaced twice under guarantee. Now it is beginning to come off again in two small places around the edge. Luckily the display area is still perfect. My view is that finger grease is a culprit (I only ever huff on the screen and use a special cloth to wipe) plus when the laptop is closed the grease also comes off from the keys which the display contacts with (little dots of grease) so if I remember I slide and A4 sheet in between.

I am slowly getting towards thinking of my next Macbook. Do the latest models still have this problem?

Can I get the screen done again?
