Has anyone had this happen? last night while surfing the internet a pop up appeared saying my computer was infected with trojans and viruses. It showed a program to download on my Mac to fix. I did not click the download button. Was this legit?

Anything in your browser is just an animation, not an actual virus scan. It's a scam trying to steal your money, definitely wise choice not clicking on it. There aren't currently viruses for Mac anyhow, so your best defense is common sense while browsing. If a site looks pretty sketchy, it would probably be best to leave it

READ THE FIRST PART (called MacDefender or MacSecurity or MacProtector installation package) OF THE FOLLOWING FAQ:
Mac Virus/Malware Info by GGJstudios
There are currently no viruses for Mac OS X in public circulation, only a handful of trojans and other malware, which have to be installed manually via entering the administrator password.
The only anti-virus you need to protect your Mac is education and common sense.
