I saw a few days ago that the iPhone 3G can be bought refurbished for $99. I currently have the Gen1 Model. I want to upgrade so I called Apple store and ATT store and none of them had it and I guess you have to buy online at ATT. I went on ATTs site and it seems the only way to get it is to buy a new line vs. upgrade the phone... Anyone able to do an upgrade of gen1 phone to iPhone 3g Refurb??

What you're trying to do is indeed possible, I don't know of any limitations on refurbished phones versus new ones. You will have to sign a new 2 year contract to upgrade to the 3G however. I suggest you call AT&T directly and tell them your problem and that you want a refurbished 3G. Best of luck!

Doesn't seem to be working out.

I called 2 times into ATT

1 told me that they could not do anything on the phone as ATT can only sell instores or online.

the other told me that another dept would help me with it and I was transferred than hung up.

what a joke. It appears there is no way to upgrade to the reburb 3g if you already have service with ATT.

Apparently people in this thread are claiming that the refurbs are only for new subscribers to AT&T (yeah, don't you just love 'em)

Sign into your account and click on Phone/Device and then click on Upgrade Today, you can't get the $99 price but you can get the $199 price.

Thanks, but the only reason I wanted to buy the 3G is because it was $100 off. I know I can get the new 3g for $199. I'll try calling ATT tomorrow and hopefully I can get a manger to figure something out for me.

No, if you're not eligible for an upgrade, you can't get the new 3G for $199, what I'm talking about is a refurb'd 3G for $199.

I should be eligible for an upgrade, I don't know why I wouldn't. I bought my iPhone Gen1 in July 07. So why wouldn't I be eligible?

The best deal for current customers who are eligible to upgrade is $149/$249 for the refurbs. The $99/$199 refurb deals are for new customers only...

So how do I get the $149 deal? When I login online and click "Upgrade Options" it shows every other phone but the iPhone 3G models I can upgrade to.
